Virginia Car Insurance Requirements for 2027: Are You Really Covered?

A confident driver

Virginia drivers, is your auto insurance ready for 2027?

You may have car insurance, but do you know what your coverage actually protects?

As the new year approaches, now is a great time to review your policy, understand Virginia's requirements, and make sure you're not overlooking important protection.

Virginia's currently established minimum auto liability insurance limits are:

Coverage

Minimum

Bodily injury — per person

$50,000

Bodily injury — per accident

$100,000

Property damage — per accident

$25,000

These are commonly called 50/100/25 limits. They took effect January 1, 2025. As of October 2026, no additional increase for January 2027 has been identified in the official requirements reviewed. Virginia also generally requires uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

Is Virginia's Minimum Coverage Enough?

Not always. State minimums help you meet legal requirements, but they may not fully protect your finances after a serious accident.

Imagine causing an accident that results in $40,000 in damage to another vehicle. If your property damage liability limit is $25,000, you could be personally responsible for the remaining $15,000. That's why reviewing your coverage matters.

Three Coverage Gaps Worth Checking

  1. Low liability limits. A serious accident could result in expenses exceeding your policy limits.

  2. Missing collision or comprehensive coverage. Liability insurance generally doesn't pay to repair your own vehicle after an accident you cause, theft, or storm damage.

  3. Insufficient uninsured/underinsured motorist protection. Another driver's insurance might not be enough to cover your eligible losses.
